Today was the big day...our first prenatal appointment. I was excited but nervous at the same time. Brian arrived just as I was called to the back for the ultrasound. Since it was still the early stages of pregnancy, they did a transv scan. Thankfully it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
When the image first popped up, I felt my heart skip a beat. I couldn’t make heads or tails of the little peanut until the ultrasound tech pointed out the head. She moved the little wand around to get a different perspective and suddenly we saw a little heart beating on the monitor. I heard the soft whoosh-whoosh-whoosh and asked the tech if that was the heartbeat. She confirmed that it was, and that it was beating at a healthy 160 BPM. Wow! Unfortunately, Brian couldn’t hear it because it was so soft (I only heard it because my head was right next to the equipment).
She took the measurements, moved the wand around some more, and I remembered thinking through it all, “I can’t believe this is our baby!” I glanced over at Brian at one point and he had a pretty dumbstruck look on his face as well. She handed us two little pictures to take home with us which Brian immediately took a picture of so he could send it out via text to my folks and Teri.
A consult and exam with my OB/GYN followed. She answered all the questions I had on the list I had prepared and talked to us about a plethora of things ranging from testing options to pediatricians. She confirmed that I was at 7 weeks 6 days and that our baby was due on August 19th. We now had a date to look forward to!
Brian headed back to work after the exam but I had to stay for blood tests...8 or 9 vials worth!
I was pretty useless the rest of the day...all I could think about was the precious little baby growing inside me whose heart I heard and saw. The one who has already captured my heart and can’t wait to meet in August.
